The Children of Israel about to go into the promise land. So, Moses is talking to them about where God brought them from and the promise to Israel of the Promise Land.
In Chapter one he refreshes the Children of Israel about their past and about God’s anger towards their disobedience in time’s past. He also appoints elders over each tribe. He reminded them that the Lord goes before them and fights for them. He also reminded them of the murmuring and complaining, thus not allowing the older generation to enter in due to their mouths.
In Chapter two God instructs the Children of Israel not to mix with other cities when they travel through. The Lord reminded them that they lacked nothing in the wilderness. They are able to buy from these cities when they travel through for food, etc. God lets the people know that He has put the fear of God in all the other nations in the Earth. When other people hear about the Children of Israel, they will fear because they will know that God is with them. In verse 36 he talks about how God gave them every city. There was noone too big for them, even if they had giants in them. It says, “The Lord our God delivered all unto us.”
In Chapter three Moses talks about how mighty they are with God’s help. Verse 5 says, “All these cities were fenced with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great many.” Being that Moses was punished and not allowed to enter in the Promise Land, he asked God in verse 25, “I pray thee, let me go over and see the good land that is beyond Jordan, that good mountain, and Lebanon.” So, God answers in verse 27 – “Get tee up into the top of Pisgah, and lift up thine eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and behold it with thine eyes: for thou shalt not go over this Jordan.” He then told Moses to instruct Joshua on how to do it.
In Chapter four, it’s an exhortation to obedience. Moses explained to them about idolatry. Moses appoints three cities of refuge on that side of Jordan. Moses reminds them of God on mountain Horeb when He showed out to them “And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness. And the Lord spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice.” (versus 11&12) He reminds them of how God gave them the commandments himself. Then Moses reminds them of idolatry. Then sadly Moses tells them how he cannot even enter into the Promise Land because of them. Sad.Then Moses explains to them the reasons of the cities of refuge: Verse 42 says, “That the slayer might flee thither, which should kill his neighbour unawares, and hated him not in times past; and that fleeing unto one of these cities he might live.”
In Chapter five, Moses reviews the commandments God gave them at Mount Horeb. He explains that if they honor the Lord and obey that all will be well with them.
