Deuteronomy 6-11

In Chapter Six Moses encourages the Children of Israel to love the Lord thy God with all their heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. (vs. 5).  He exhorts them to teach their children as much as they can about God and His expectations.   This scripture stuck out to me:

VERSE  9 – AND THOU SHALT BIND THEM FOR A SIGN UPON THINE HAND

AND THEY SHALL BE AS FRONTLETS BETWEEN THINE EYES.

Why would God say on hand or between eyes? Does that remind you of the same thing that will happen with the mark of the beast coming soon? Why? Because it will show that they are the property of Satan at that point.

In chapter seven Moses tells them that when God gives them the land that they are to not partner with these people at all. He instructed them that they are to utterly destroy them and make no covenant with them or show any mercy. God is very strict and does not want them to touch the unclean thing.  In these Bible Studies we have learned that God is protective over His people. It is like they are in a bubble. He can whip them, discipline them, kill them, and punish them…BUT DON’T LET ANYONE IN THE WORLD SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THEM OR THEY WILL BE DESTROYED! So, in verse nine he reiterates, “Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations.” Here’s the blessings if they obey his commandments:

  • God will keep unto thee the covenant and the mercy which he sware unto thy fathers

  • He will love thee, bless thee and multiply thee

  • He will bless the fruit of your womb, the land, corn, wine, oil and increase their kine, and the flocks of thy sheep

  • Thou shalt be blessed above all people

  • There shalt not be male or female barren among you or your cattle

  • The Lord will take away from thee all sickness

  • God will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, upon thee; but will lay them upon all them that hate thee.

These are pretty amazing blessings through obeying God!  Moses exhorted them not to take idols into their house or participate in other idols in other cultures.

In chapter eight Moses explains that the time has come for them to go into their Promise Land! Moses reminds them of their journey in the wilderness. He reminds them of how God humbled them.  He talks about how God chastens those that He loves.  He reminds them not to forget where they came from when they get to this land.  Do not say that “my power and my wealth got me all this stuff”….you must remember that God has done all these things. In verse 19 he reminds them as well that if they serve other Gods and leave God after he takes them to the Promise Land, that they will perish “because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the Lord your God.”

In Chapter nine God lets them know that He will go before them.  Moses instructs them that they are not allowed to think that their own righteousness brought them the blessings.  God reminds them that it is through the unrighteousness of the people before them is the reason God is taking the land from  them, then turning around and giving it to the Children of Israel.  Moses reminded them that they are a stiff-necked people.  Moses says in verse 24 that “they have been rebellious since the day I knew you.” That’s a pretty harsh statement! However, he was letting them know that it wasn’t because of them being good people why they got this!

In Chapter ten it shows God’s mercy in restoring the two tablets of stone to the Children of Israel.  He talked about Aron dying in the wilderness and how his son Eleazar took over the priesthood. God separated the Tribe of Levi to take care of the temple to:

  • Bear the Ark of teh Covenant of the Lord

  • To stand before the Lord to minister unto Him

  • To bless in His name unto this name

  • Levi has no inheritance with his brethren for the Lord is His inheritance

Moses stayed on that mountain forty days and nights. He continues assuring the Children of Israel that if they will just do what the Lord requires and fear the Lord their God, walk in his ways, love him and serve him with all thine heart, then they will receive all the promises.

In Chapter 11, Moses exhorts them to be obedient again.  In verse 18 again he says bear it on your hands and on the frontlets between your eyes! Bear the word of God!  For the Lord gives them a cursing and a blessing. Serve him or else basically.
